If there is one thing we all need, it’s food. Regardless of the situation we happen to find ourselves at in, if we aren’t eating, we are going to be happy and we won’t be surviving very long.
Most of us take food for granted and we really don’t think much about it under our current circumstances. On the other hand, however, when we find ourselves in the middle of nowhere and wanting a meal, we need to get creative. That is where this survival spear comes in.
With a spear such as this, we can easily catch fish, bring down some type of small animal or perhaps even a larger animal. This spear can also be used as a protective item in some cases.
It really starts out with choosing the proper tree to make the spear. A piece of hardwood is always going to be the best choice, such as hickory or oak. It can stand the test of time and will work well under the fire test.
Something else to keep in mind is that the spear needs to be slightly larger than we are. If you were to choose a tree that was shorter than you, you would run the risk of poking yourself with the sharp end of the spear all too often. Always make sure you choose a tall tree.
After finding the tree that you want, making sure that it is about 2 inches in diameter, you would cut it as close to the ground as possible. You can then grab some vine or a piece of paracord from your survival kit and wrap it around the tree about 10 inches from the end.
The paracord will keep the tree from splitting too far. You can then use your survival knife and a small branch to hit the knife and knock it down through the center of the tree. You want to split it cleanly about 10 inches long.
Turn the blade sideways and make another split so that you have a four-piece spear at the end. Each of those individual pieces should be sharpened as much as possible.
Now is where the fire comes in. Shoring it up by fire will help it to last longer and will ensure that it doesn’t wear out too quickly. There are two different ways that you can do this.
One option is to simply put the spear end of the branch into the fire down in the coals. That will heat it up as quickly as possible and will make the wood sturdy.
Another option is to hold it above the flames and slowly spin it. Think of it as toasting it, almost as if you were toasting a marshmallow. It will take quite some time to get it done, but it will be well worth it in the end when you have your survival spear by your side.
